Importing assets with CSV

If you already track your assets in a spreadsheet, you can import them straight into ClearAsset instead of adding them one at a time.

Warning

CSV import is a Professional plan feature. On Base, add assets manually or upgrade to Professional to unlock bulk import.

How it works

  1. Go to Import in the sidebar and choose the asset type you're importing — Devices, Software, Subscriptions, or User Accounts.
  2. Download the CSV template for that asset type. It lists every column ClearAsset understands, with the required ones marked.
  3. Fill in your spreadsheet, save it as CSV, and upload it.
  4. ClearAsset validates every row before importing anything. If a row has a problem — a missing required field, an invalid date, an unrecognised value — you'll see exactly which row and why.
  5. Fix any errors in your file and re-upload, or proceed with only the valid rows.

Tips for a clean import

  • Match column headers exactly to the template — extra or renamed columns are ignored, not matched by guesswork.
  • Dates should be in a consistent format (YYYY-MM-DD works reliably).
  • Leave optional fields blank rather than using placeholders like "N/A" — blank fields stay empty, but "N/A" gets imported as literal text.
  • If you're not sure a device already exists in ClearAsset, export your current list first and compare before importing, to avoid duplicates.

Tip

Importing doesn't overwrite existing records — each row creates a new asset. Run a small test import (2–3 rows) first if you're working with a large file.
